D3 was an adult male bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) that stranded alive on Mustang Island. He stranded while the TMMSN was caring for another bottlenose dolphin, D2 and gave volunteers the chance to rise to the challenge of simultaneously caring for two animals. He was 271 cm (8.5 ft) in length and weighed 209 kg (460 lbs). D3 was rehabilitated at the Texas State Aquarium in Corpus Christi for 30 days before being fitted with a satellite tag and released into the Gulf of Mexico on May 9, 1994. Tracking D3 provided unique insights into the movement patterns of adult bottlenose dolphins.
